The topic?
Why most goal-setting advice is wrong. Yes, wrong.
Because if you're building new goals from your old identity, you're just looping. Same patterns, same ceilings, different calendar year. A few things might shift on the surface, but nothing fundamentally changes.
And that’s fine if you’re satisfied with your current state. But most of us are a bit ambitious, and therefore, we crave and seek growth.
Traditional goal planning focuses on what you want to achieve. But that keeps you stuck in the same patterns. The real work is shifting your identity before any strategy will actually work.
One listener, Angelina, commented: “External results always match your internal identity. Phewww.”
That “phewww” said everything.
Because when it lands, it lands hard. Your external results, including your revenue, will always match your internal identity. Not your effort, strategy, or audience size.
Your identity.
And if there’s a gap between who you see yourself as and what you’re trying to build, that gap becomes your ceiling.
The Connection Most People Miss
Over the past several weeks, I introduced the Elevation Index and its four domains: Identity, Revenue, Sovereignty, and Capacity.
This week, I want to go deeper on something I’ve watched play out hundreds of times in my almost 30 years in business.
Identity and Revenue aren’t separate domains. They’re directly connected. One determines the other.
Your revenue has a ceiling. And that ceiling isn’t set by your market, your niche, or your offer.
It’s set by how you see yourself.
The Data Is Clear
This is not my opinion.
A 2025 study found that self-employed women charge 26-48% less than men for equivalent work, with an average gap of 15%. And a FreshBooks survey revealed that women entrepreneurs pay themselves 28% less than their male counterparts, even when comparing the same industries.
What’s fascinating is that 20% of the women surveyed said they had to charge less than men to attract customers. But 70% of those same women started their businesses specifically to escape workplace discrimination and glass ceilings.
They left corporate to build something of their own. And then they recreated the gap themselves.
Yes, there are systemic barriers that keep women financially behind, but there’s more to it than that.
This is an identity problem. Sometimes we carry the ceiling with us.
I’ve seen this in women earning six figures who still whisper their rates.
Where’s your ceiling?
The Identity-Revenue Loop
It’s this simple:
Your identity determines what you believe you can charge.
What you charge determines who you attract.
Who you attract reinforces your identity.
If you see yourself as “still building,” you price like someone still building. You attract clients who want “still building” prices. Those clients confirm your belief that this is what the market will pay. And the loop continues.
The woman charging $5,000 for $15,000 work isn’t making a pricing mistake. She’s making an identity statement. She’s telling the market exactly how she sees herself.
And the market believes her.
I’ve watched brilliant women stay stuck at the same revenue for years. Same offers. Same audience. Same results. Their strategy wasn't wrong, but their identity hadn’t kept pace with their capability.
You can’t out-earn your self-concept. Full stop.
What Changes When Identity Shifts
When identity shifts, pricing stops feeling like a negotiation. It starts feeling like a reflection.
You stop calculating what the market will bear. You start stating what the work is worth.
You stop attracting clients who need convincing. You start attracting clients who already trust.
You stop over-delivering to prove your value. You start delivering exactly what you promised, knowing it’s enough.
This is Alignment, the second of the 5 A’s of Joyful Ambition™. When who you are and what you charge are in alignment, selling starts to feel like an invitation.
The revenue follows.
And once that shift happens, you don’t go back. You can’t.

If you woke up tomorrow fully believing you were the expert your best clients already think you are, what would change?
What would feel scary? What would feel like relief?
Would you raise your rates?
Would you stop over-explaining your value?

Your revenue is waiting for you to catch up to who you’ve already become.
The identity ceiling is real. And you’re the only one who can raise it.
Stop Leaving Money On the Table
